1.03 Summary
- Measurement is a process which determines a specific value for (i.e. quantifies) the property being measured (e.g. length mass etc.)
- The properties we measure are referred to as quantities, (however the term quantity can also be used to simply mean "amount")
- There are five fundamental physical properties which we call base dimensions.
- Length (L)
- Time (T)
- Mass (M)
- Electrical Charge (Q)
- Temperature (Θ)
- All other physical properties can be broken down into different combinations of these base dimensions.
- Units that do not have any equivalent base dimensions are called dimensionless units
- Numbers that have no units of measurement (or have dimensionless units) are called dimensionless numbers
